Silt fence is a temporary, cost-effective sediment control barrier used primarily on construction sites to prevent soil erosion and protect water quality. Made from UV stabilised polypropylene geotextile, it is used above ground to retain sediment and avoid silt pollution into rivers, lakes, open and closed drains and sensitive environments.
Silt fences are often a requirement to be used around construction and earthwork sites to prevent the silt or sediment running off the construction zone in an uncontrolled manner, polluting waterways. It can also effectively prevent sediment movement from:
- Soil stockpiles
- Swale drains
- Riparian batters
- Steep batters
- Spillways
- Floodways

INSTALLATION
Geofabrics silt fence can be supplied with a full range of accessories including steel Y posts, 2.5mm tensioning wire and safety caps. Silt fences are typically installed on earthworks sites at the downstream boundary or immediately downstream of soil stockpiles.
The installation of silt fences follows local sediment control guidelines where supporting post spacing is typically no more than 2m apart and the silt fence extends to a height of 600mm above ground. Geofabrics accessories provide support to the silt fence to meet the local council requirements. In all cases, regular maintenance of silt fences is required which includes inspections after storms and removal of excessive silt deposits.

FUNCTION
Erosion & Sediment Control
The use of a geosynthetic to prevent soil or other particle movements on the surface slope. Acts to reduce soil erosion caused by wind forces, rainfall impact and surface water runoff. The use of geosynthetics in erosion control is to maintain soil cover either as a temporary measure offering protection from soil loss whilst vegetation is established or as a permanent control measure, typically on steeper slopes or high-water velocity situations.
